Monument Health, Rapid City

At Monument Health Heart and Vascular Institute, you’ll find western South Dakota’s largest group of cardiovascular specialists who offer the full spectrum of care. They team up with skilled nurses, sonographers and advanced practice providers to make sure you receive the right care at the right time.

“We have a fantastic group of physicians and advanced practice providers at the Heart and Vascular Institute,” said Joseph Tuma, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at Monument Health. “Just about every one of our doctors could be leaders of programs at any center in the country, and yet they chose to come to Rapid City.” Each cardiologist at the Heart and Vascular Institute is board-certified or board-eligible in their specialties of cardiology, vascular medicine, cardiac and thoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and more.

In its first year participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-AFib Registry, the Heart and Vascular Institute achieved the Silver Award, the highest possible first-year award. For the 11th straight year, the American College of Cardiology presented the NCDR Chest Pain–MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award to Monument Health. This award recognizes Monument Health’s caregivers and providers for delivering the highest quality care to heart attack patients and places them in the top 7 percent of hospitals nationwide. The Heart and Vascular Institute is one of only 57 centers in the country who have achieved platinum status for excellence in cardiovascular outcomes for ten consecutive years as part of the ACTION Registry.

The Cardiovascular Surgery Program achieved a rating of two out of three stars from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a national leader in health care transparency and accountability. Participation in the STS National Database is a crucial investment for quality improvement.

The Heart and Vascular Institute is providing the communities of the Black Hills with the best heart care in the region. What’s more, the doctors at the Institute are conducting groundbreaking research that is advancing heart and vascular care throughout the world. “We have earned multiple awards for our high quality outcomes, which puts us at the upper echelon of some of the biggest programs in the country,” said Dr. Tuma. “The Heart and Vascular Institute is focused on patient-centered care with high quality outcomes – that is the backbone of our program.”
