For 20 years, Chubby Chipmunk has been delighting the Black Hills with decadent truffles that have become a symbol of celebration, indulgence and chocolate perfection. From birthdays to weddings, anniversaries and beyond, these masterfully hand-dipped truffles — made with the finest chocolate, butter and, of course, love — have earned a special place in the hearts of chocolate lovers far and wide.
The story of Chubby Chipmunk began in 2004, when Chip Tautkus created her signature truffles for a local event. What started as a small operation quickly blossomed into a beloved local business. “Eventually, we bought the old service station in Deadwood and turned it into the shop we have today,” Seth Tautkus, Chip’s son, recalled.
Now, two decades later, Seth and his wife Carolie own and run the family business, carrying on the legacy that Chip started. “We’re proud of our family and we’re excited for the future,” said Carolie. “Our daughters help out in the shop, and it’s been amazing to pass on this work ethic to them.”
Over the years, this chocolate shop has earned national acclaim. From supplying truffles for the swag bags at the Oscars to creating bespoke chocolates for celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Chubby Chipmunk has made its mark in the world of indulgence.
Despite these glittering milestones, Seth and Carolie remain deeply connected to their roots. “We’ll never compromise on quality,” Seth emphasized. Whether it’s their signature truffles or newer offerings like caramel and toffee creations, each bite is a rich, melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Looking to the future, the Tautkuses are excited to expand their offerings and enhance the customer experience. They plan to improve their Deadwood storefront and create an inviting outdoor space for visitors to savor their creations. As Chubby Chipmunk celebrates its 20th year, Seth and Carolie are more determined than ever to keep building on their legacy, one indulgent truffle at a time.
