Staple & Spice Market

Many say just the welcoming aroma of Staple & Spice Market is enough to make you feel healthier: warm spices, fresh-ground grains, something familiar and grounding. For nearly a century, that feeling has lived inside the corner of the historic Rose Building in downtown Rapid City, and today it’s carefully stewarded by Tammy Yanders.
“There’s been a corner market here for nearly 100 years,” Tammy said. “My husband and I are the fifth owners, which is really cool to think about.” The building has worn many names over the decades, but the heart of the store has remained the same — a place the community trusts.
Today, that trust has been reinforced by Tammy’s background as a registered nurse and wellness coach. “I want people to feel empowered, not overwhelmed when it comes to their health,” she said. “If it’s on our shelves, it’s something I feed my own family or would take myself.” From spices and teas to supplements and local foods, Tammy is intentional about the products she offers. “Supporting local is huge to me,” she added. What surprises first-time visitors most is the scope: a wall of spices, peanut butter and flour ground in-store, local meats, non-alcoholic beverages, wellness products and more. But for Tammy, the most rewarding part of leading this shop is the people. “The stories people share with you are incredible. It’s a gift to be part of their journey.”
Customers of all ages stop in — some daily — to shop, visit or simply connect. “People come in for groceries, but they stay because they feel seen and supported,” Tammy said. She credits much of this warm, welcoming atmosphere to her team. “I have an amazing staff who are knowledgeable and truly care about our customers,” she said.
And because it has become such a vital part of so many people’s stories, Tammy feels that Staple & Spice Market has become more than just a place to shop. “This store is an extension of my family and the life I’ve built,” she said. “Health, family, community — it’s all connected.”
