For nearly a century, Servall has served as a vital resource for businesses across Rapid City and the Black Hills. Being family-owned, this company has built its reputation on reliable service and local roots, becoming a trusted partner for uniform, linen and facility supply solutions. Today, that enduring legacy is being carried into the future by a new generation.
Servall recently turned the page to a new chapter under fifth- generation owner Chase Dudley, as his father, Brad, steps back after decades at the helm. Reflecting on this progression, Chase noted the growth that comes with the role. “It’s been a good year. A lot of learning. A lot of ups and downs, but it’s been great,” he said.
Brad views this transition as a vital evolution rather than a simple hand-off. “Transitioning to a new generation doesn’t mean everything’s going to stay the same,” he said. “It certainly didn’t stay the same when I moved in as a fourth generation leader. And that change is good.”
This evolution has been anchored by unwavering family support. Brad was quick to credit his wife, Polly, for her role in the company’s success. “Honestly, Polly has been very, very supportive of this whole venture,” he said. “If those family members at home aren’t
on board, we couldn’t do what we do.”
While the business grows and adapts, certain core principles remain untouchable — specifically the commitment to doing the right thing and the constant pursuit of improvement. These values were recently put into action with a complete overhaul of the company’s wastewater system. Though it was a massive undertaking with no direct financial gain, the family saw it as a necessary investment in the region. “There’s no return on investment,” Brad said. “But the return on investment to us is
our community.”
This upgrade is a physical manifestation of Servall’s long- standing environmental mission. “We are a green company,”
Chase added. “That will never change. It’s in our mission
statement for a reason.”
That same community-first mindset extends far beyond the facility walls. Over the years, Servall has donated essential services and supplies to local nonprofits like the YMCA, Youth and Family Services, area schools and veterans’ organizations. Their partnership with the Humane Society of the Black Hills is particularly impactful. “Over the years, we’ve washed over 4,000,000 pounds of laundry for the Humane Society and those services are provided free of charge,” Chase said.
Brad closed with a note of gratitude for the city and the team that has sustained the family business since the beginning. After starting in Norfolk, Nebraska in 1916, “Rapid City’s been our home since 1937,” he said, “and as one small business to another, we want to help each other — that’s how we survive.” He is equally quick to credit the employees who drive that mission. “Our people are why we’re here,” Brad said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”
Ultimately, Servall’s generations of success is rooted in simple integrity. “We’re open with our customers, and we’re willing to do just about anything to help them,” Brad said. As leadership passes to the fifth generation, the company remains firmly planted in the values that have defined it: integrity, honesty, improvement, relationship, collaboration, stewardship and innovation.
