Laurie Sutterer, Destination Specialist at Visit Rapid City, is passionate about sharing the beauty and history of Rapid City with visitors. Laurie has lived in Rapid City for over 40 years, and her love for the area shines through whenever she talks about what she calls her dream job: welcoming visitors to her hometown.
The new Visitor Center, which opened in May of 2024, is a particular point of pride for Laurie. This downtown destination was designed to offer more than just information — it’s a place to showcase the things that make Rapid City a one-of-a-kind destination. “We wanted to create a space that offers something special that visitors can’t find elsewhere,” Laurie explained. The Center features a range of local merchandise that highlights the area’s charm. It’s also a hub for travel resources, where visitors can access indispensable materials such as itinerary inspiration, maps, guides and more. “We never assume what people want to see, so we always ask them about their bucket list,” Laurie said. This approach helps visitors experience a trip that is tailor-made just for them.
Since its opening, the new Visitor Center has already welcomed over 20,000 visitors. The center has become a vital resource, with guests often returning to express gratitude for the assistance. Sutterer added, “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that we’ve helped people make the most of their time here.”
The Downtown Ambassador program is another key part of this effort to create a welcoming environment for tourists. Ambassadors greet and interact with visitors to Downtown Rapid City, offering personalized recommendations and even offering some guidance and direction to see all of the sculptures on the City of Presidents walking tour. For visitors and residents alike, these programs exemplify Rapid City’s commitment to making each visitor’s journey a memorable one.
