Each of us has the desire for comfort, care and support. When someone we love has a terminal illness, these desires become critical needs. When this happens, what we want most for our loved one is compassionate support and care that allows them to live their last days with dignity and without pain.
Hospice is not a place, it is a philosophy of care providing medical, emotional and spiritual care for patients experiencing illness in a life-limiting manner. Monument Health home hospice services provide this care for patients in the comfort of their own home.
“What is so great about home health and hospice is that it gives the opportunity for the patient to be where they are comfortable and feel safe,” Lucas Kretschmar, registered nurse, said. “So it can be a big relief for people who want to remain at home when they learn we can offer in-home care and services. Also, care in the home can help limit the stress put on the hospital system.”
Hospice caregivers are committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of patients by enabling them and their loved ones to live each day as fully and as comfortably as possible. The hospice team is attentive to the medical, emotional and social needs of patients, their families and friends.
“It’s a different type of nursing, but it’s so rewarding,” Chelsea Harr, registered nurse, said. “We’re present at such a personal time in the patient’s and family’s lives, and we strive to be of service to them with our presence, knowledge and care.”
Monument Health also provides hospice care at the Hospice House in Rapid City. Since opening in 2007, the Hospice House has offered home-like amenities, care and comfort for patients and their families.
