In a world obsessed with instant images, Kevin Eilbeck reaches back into the 1850s — into a time when photography was alchemy and patience. Based in Rapid City and serving western South Dakota and beyond, Kevin is a commercial and portrait photographer whose work also spans aerial, macro, products, architecture and the mesmerizing world of wet plate photography. Kevin’s journey behind the lens began long before digital — first as a photo assistant in Los Angeles, then ultimately circling back to the Black Hills with a rich commercial portfolio shaped by high-pressure commercial shoots, celebrity sessions and years of industry experience.
Over time, that technical foundation gave way to something more intuitive. “Once you learn how light works,” Kevin said, “the light bulb goes off. Then you start asking, ‘What looks cool?’” With over three decades of photography experience, Kevin’s approach has shifted from technical perfection to creative confidence. “There’s really no rules for good photographs. There’s just good photographs,” he said, quoting Ansel Adams. For him, staying professional doesn’t mean rigid control — it means knowing when to loosen up and let the image become what it wants to be, embracing imperfections that feel human and honest.
Perhaps the most remarkable thread in Kevin’s creative tapestry is wet plate collodion photography. This 19th-century method involves hand-coating metal plates with collodion and silver to make a one-of-a-kind image — no negatives, no duplicates, just a singular artifact of light and chemistry. “I realized I’ve got the equipment, so I’m gonna give this a shot,” Kevin said about venturing into this historic photo technique. The process is demanding, serendipitous and deeply tactile — a beautiful counterpoint to digital’s ease.
For Kevin, photography remains, at its heart, a story told in light, subject and time. His wet plate work isn’t just a nod to history or a novelty; it’s an invitation to slow down, look closely and see something timeless in each living face.
