Scheels, JC Joyce

Organizations frequently talk about culture, but few places live out this crucial concept like Scheels.

JC Joyce is the Store Leader and a Partner at Scheels in Rapid City. JC’s title offers some insight about the culture at Scheels. “We’re 100 percent employee owned. We don’t have shareholders other than the associates at Scheels,” she says.

Because of this, Scheels employees bring more to the table. “We all make better decisions because we have skin in the game,” she says. This ownership keeps the Scheels team invested and focused on serving their customers. “We do our best to honor every single customer who walks through the door.”

This emphasis on service championed by JC and her team has deep roots. The story of the Scheels experience began in 1902. Friedrich A. Scheele, a German immigrant, used the profits from his first potato harvest in Minnesota to make a down payment on a small hardware store. Through a few decades and generations, this humble store grew and expanded into multiple locations and states.

The Scheels in Rapid City has over 80 specialty shops within its walls with a knowledgeable team accompanying each department. “The associates study a lot to be experts in their areas,” shares JC.

One final element sets the Scheels team apart. “One of our main objectives is to give back to our community,” JC says. “We’re proud that a lot of our leaders serve on boards in the community and we give a lot of our dollars back to the community through United Way and other partner organizations.”

More than just a place to buy clothing and sporting goods, Scheels is a place to find experts who care about their customers and their community.
