There’s a reason that the United Way of the Black Hills has become the charity of choice for so many locals. Donors and nonprofit partners alike have discovered the trustworthiness and effectiveness of UWBH.
The United Way of the Black Hills uses a tried and true process to distribute funds to local nonprofits that are doing the most good. “People trust that process,” says Jamie Toennies, Executive Director. “The nonprofits, too, continue to work with us because they see us as a partner and not competition. We are all working towards the same goals for our community as a whole. We are wholeheartedly collaborative.”
UWBH’s strategy in directing funds is indeed proven, but it’s always being refined. In 2019, Jamie and her team commissioned a formal study to pinpoint the most pressing needs of the Black Hills. The needs they found were consistent throughout each Black Hills community.
The UWBH team and their partner organizations went to work to address the needs revealed from the study. “One of the things that we always point out is that no one organization can solve these complex issues alone,” Jamie explains. “We bring all of the different partners to the table. We’re working with more than 50 different nonprofits and local governments and many others to all come together to address these needs.”
With this mix of collaboration and a locally-focused approach to problem-solving, Jamie and the rest of the United Way of the Black Hills team hope to put a permanent end to some of the most prevalent challenges facing the Black Hills.
