Black Hills Pediatrics, LLP

Since its opening in 1983, Black Hills Pediatrics has grown into the largest pediatric practice in western South Dakota. Today, its staff has a combined 160-plus years of experience providing exceptional, compassionate care. With a sole-focus on children’s health, the clinic stands out for its family-centered approach and its pioneering role in offering pediatric-specific urgent care seven days a week. Black Hills Pediatrics earned a reputation for specialized care, becoming the first clinic in the region to provide pediatric urgent care back in 1985.

Black Hills Pediatrics offers pediatric urgent care from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, ensuring families have access to care when they need it most.

What truly sets the clinic apart is its complete and total dedication to pediatrics. As clinic manager Dean Hass explains, “Everyone here, from the front desk to the doctors, specializes in pediatrics. It’s not just part of our job; it’s our entire focus.” The providers are highly trained, having completed extensive pediatric residency programs focused solely on children’s health. This specialized expertise underpins their commitment to delivering the best care possible.

But this laser-focused specialization wouldn’t mean much without the clinic’s passionate providers. Dr. David Mueller, for example, can trace his inspiration for offering excellence in pediatric care to his mother. “My mom was always very passionate about helping kids,” he said. “She was very influential in helping me find my passion. It’s about helping kids, and that’s what I love to do.”

Dr. Cara Hamilton is driven by her understanding of the developmental challenges children face. “Kids often don’t grasp the long-term consequences of their actions.I love helping them navigate those years,” she explained.

Dr. John Paul is excited at the prospect of intervening early when needed. “Identifying and addressing chronic conditions early can have a profound, lasting impact on a child’s health,” he said.

Dr. Maggie Kuehler values the long-term relationships she builds with her patients, saying, “Watching them grow, from newborns to teenagers, and being a part of their journey is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s helping them through toddlerhood or guiding them through adolescence, it’s such a privilege.”

The clinic’s child-friendly environment plays a key role in its approach to care. Each exam room is uniquely themed—whether it’s Star Wars or space exploration — to make visits fun for young patients. Dr. Greg Anderson shared, “We want kids to feel comfortable and even excited about coming to the doctor. It’s about making the experience enjoyable for both the child and their parents.”

Equally important is the clinic’s commitment to supporting entire families. Dr. Kuehler emphasized, “Helping parents navigate the challenges of toddlerhood or adolescence is a big part of our role. It’s about offering support to the whole family, not just the patient.”

As an independent, physician-owned practice, Black Hills Pediatrics is free from corporate influence, allowing the team to focus solely on what’s best for their patients. Dr. Anderson explained, “Being privately owned means we can make decisions based on what’s best for our patients, without the influence of large healthcare corporations. That autonomy ensures we continue to provide the highest-quality, personalized care.”

Through its skilled team, dedication to patient care, and family-focused approach, Black Hills Pediatrics is more than just a pediatric urgent care clinic — it’s a trusted partner in supporting the health and well-being of children throughout western South Dakota.
