Motherhood is a journey full of both joy and isolation. For many moms in the Black Hills, Black Hills MomCo offers a vital community — a place to connect with others who understand the ups and downs of parenting and life.
Black Hills MomCo is part of the international movement called The MomCo, formerly known as MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). This global nonprofit partners with local churches to create spaces where moms can find friendship, support and encouragement through faith-based gatherings. The organization supports moms in all stages of motherhood with resources, events and meaningful connections.
Gabby Gale, one of Black Hills MomCo’s co-coordinators, explained she originally encountered the group through a connection with another mom she met at the park. Today, as co-coordinator, she views leadership as an opportunity to help other moms experience that same life-giving community. “Moms, especially new moms,
need support. If I can be a part of that while spreading the gospel,” Gabby said, “then that’s one of my favorite things to be doing.”
Black Hills MomCo meets twice a month from September through May at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rapid City. Each meeting offers a light brunch, childcare, creative activities and discussions designed to help moms build meaningful friendships and grow in faith.
KidCo is the name of the childcare program that happens during MomCo meetups, offering care for infants through elementary-aged kids — including a special room for homeschoolers. Kids get to enjoy a fun, faith-based experience with lessons, crafts, playtime and more, all led by a trained, background-checked team.
This past year, Black Hills MomCo expanded, launching a new sister group at Crossroads Wesleyan Church. Gabby noted that having more than one group is a positive sign for the community: “The more groups that are here, the better,” she said.
Abby Crittenden, another co-coordinator, echoed this sentiment about the importance of community. She was drawn to MomCo as a new mom looking for connections. “Being a mom can be really lonely,” Abby said. “This group fills that gap. I love my kids, but it’s life-giving to be seen and recognized as a person, not just a mom.”
Abby also understands that joining a group can feel intimidating. “It took me several invitations from other moms before I said yes to attending,” she said. “We still see that a lot today, but when moms finally check us out, they never regret it.”
Throughout the year, Black Hills MomCo hosts a variety of events beyond their regular meetings — including seasonal celebrations, Mom’s Nights Out, service projects, an annual Touch-A-Truck event and much more — all designed to nurture mothers and their families.
If you’re on the fence about joining, Gabby’s advice is simple:
“Just come and see for yourself.”
