Every parade, home show and driveway pickup tells the story of Black Hills Dumpster Rentals. Caitlin Edgar, co-owner with her husband, Ty, isn’t just renting dumpsters — she’s building relationships, keeping deliveries timely and making sure the business serves real people in the real world.
From humble beginnings to now a fleet of 140 roll-offs, it’s been a mix of hard work, faith and figuring it out along the way. “It started as my husband Ty’s idea,” Caitlin said. “He noticed a need while running our construction company — crews hauling their own debris to the dump and materials piling up all over the job sites. He saw a gap, and even though I told him we weren’t dumpster people, he went for it. Then, it kind of turned into my baby.”
Caitlin became the face and the heart of the company, handling customer calls, dispatch and oversight of drivers. “I enjoy the rhythm of it,” she said. “From answering phones to managing invoicing and paperwork, I took it on little by little. And I love it — the customer service side, connecting with people, solving problems and seeing the difference we make.”
Community involvement has always been a priority. Black Hills Dumpster Rentals participates in events like the MomCo Touch-a-Truck, the Black Hills Home Builders Association Home Show, the Rapid City Festival of Lights Parade and more. Caitlin noted, “We’re the only roll-off company doing things like that, and it’s fun getting to know our customers personally. It’s not just construction crews — we serve residential clients too, building relationships across the community.”
Starting from a single-stall garage, the business grew to over 140 dumpsters of varying sizes, with a full-time welder and multiple trucks. Caitlin’s organizational skills kept the operation smooth as it scaled. “When we started, it was chaotic,” she said. “Now it runs way smoother because of the structure and systems we put in place. I like to oversee it all, making sure our team and our customers are taken care of.”
Faith plays a central role in how the Edgars run all of their businesses. “Owning and running a business isn’t for the faint of heart,” Caitlin said. “Our faith gives us perspective on hard days and reminds us to serve others. We try to do the right thing, provide transparency, and keep honesty at the forefront. Customers notice it, and it matters to us.”
Caitlin emphasized accessibility and affordability, especially for clients outside Rapid City. “Getting a roll-off to places like Custer or Edgemont used to be expensive and slow. Our goal was to make it affordable and reliable so people could have it at their fingertips when they’re building, moving or managing a family emergency. Same-day or next-day delivery is something we prioritize.”
Giving back is equally important. The company donates roll-offs to local fundraisers like Wyatt’s Lemonade Stand and supports other local initiatives. “We remember where we started,” Caitlin said. “We built this from humble beginnings, and we want to help others along the way.”
From humble beginnings in 2018 to a thriving operation today, Caitlin and Ty have built more than a dumpster business — they’ve built a community-minded, customer-focused, faith-driven company. “We’re just getting started,” Caitlin said. “There’s a lot ahead, and we plan to keep growing, evolving and finding ways to set ourselves apart while serving our customers.”
